E-commerce on Odoo or a custom store: which fits

Odoo e-commerce suits shops tied to stock and accounts. A custom store suits unusual buying journeys. Here is how to choose for your business.

Choose Odoo e-commerce when the shop should share one system with stock, orders and accounts. Choose a custom store when your buying journey is unusual enough that a standard shop would fight you. Most businesses that sell ordinary products fit the first group.

The right answer depends on what you sell, how you fulfil orders and who maintains the shop afterwards.

What a shop actually has to do

Whatever you pick, the same jobs need doing:

  • Show a catalogue with clear product pages, variants, prices and images.
  • Take orders and payments, or take enquiries from business buyers.
  • Keep stock honest between the shop and the warehouse.
  • Pass orders to delivery and invoicing without retyping.
  • Give returning customers an account and order history.

The question is where each job lives, and how much of it you must build yourself.

When Odoo fits

Odoo works well when the shop is one part of a wider business. A web order can flow into stock, delivery and invoicing without anyone copying it across. Stock shown on the site stays close to what is in the warehouse, which cuts the problem of customers ordering items that are gone.

It suits you if:

  • You sell products online, or want to start.
  • Stock must stay correct across the shop and the warehouse.
  • Business customers order by quote rather than paying online.
  • You want one system for the shop, stock and accounts.

Enquiry-style checkout is useful for suppliers. A business buyer requests a quote instead of paying on the spot, and the quote moves through the same sales process as any other.

When a custom store fits

A custom store makes sense when what you sell or how people buy does not fit a standard shop. Examples in general terms: a product the customer must configure step by step, a booking flow with unusual rules, or a marketplace with several sellers and its own logic.

You get full control of the journey. You also own the build, the testing and the upkeep. Every feature you add is a feature someone must maintain, and connecting it to stock and accounts is extra work. Our web apps work covers this kind of build.

A fair test: if you can describe your shop in a few plain sentences using ordinary shop words, a standard shop is probably enough. If your description needs diagrams, think custom.

Payments, shipping and catalogue

Payments and shipping are scoped to your market. Gateways and carriers differ by region, so agree them early and test real orders from start to finish, through stock and invoicing.

For the catalogue, plan categories, variants and prices before you load anything. Large catalogues need bulk import tools, and pictures take longer than people expect. Check a sample with the team before loading the whole range.

Questions to ask before you choose

  • Does the shop need to share stock with a warehouse or branches?
  • Do some customers order by quote?
  • Will the same people who run the business also run the shop?
  • Is there something in the buying journey a standard shop cannot do?
  • Who will maintain it in a year?

If your answers point to shared stock, quotes and one team, Odoo is likely to be simpler. If they point to an unusual journey, consider custom. A mixed approach is also possible: a standard shop for the catalogue and a small custom piece for the odd part.

Where Teapot Techies fits

We build stores on Odoo’s website and shop apps, so products, stock, orders and invoices stay in one place, and we host and maintain them. If another approach fits you better, we will say so, and we build custom web apps when a standard shop will not do. Read more on e-commerce stores.
