Choose by need, not by edition name. Community is free and covers most day-to-day operations: sales, purchase, stock, basic accounting, point of sale and a website. Enterprise adds extra apps and features and needs a licence from Odoo. Many businesses start on Community and move later. Some need Enterprise from the first day.
What each edition is
Community is the open-source core. You can run it on your own server or have it hosted, and you pay no licence fee to Odoo.
Enterprise is the same core plus additional apps and features, with a licence you buy from Odoo. We do not set that licence and we do not quote its terms here. Check current licence terms with Odoo directly.
How to choose by need
Start from your processes. List what your team must be able to do, then check which edition covers each item.
| Your situation | What to think about |
|---|---|
| Sales, purchase, stock and invoicing for one business | Community usually covers it |
| Counter or restaurant sales | Community has point of sale |
| A simple website or shop | Community has the website and shop apps |
| Heavier accounting, extra reports or specialised apps | Look at what Enterprise adds for your case |
| Wanting a vendor-backed licence relationship | Enterprise gives you one |
| Tight budget and a willingness to configure carefully | Community is a reasonable start |
Features change between releases, so confirm the exact feature list for the version you plan to run. Do not rely on a blog post, including this one, for the final answer.
Questions to ask before deciding
- Which feature do we need that standard Community lacks?
- Can a small custom feature or a well-maintained add-on cover it?
- How many people will use the system, and does the licence grow with them?
- Who will support it, and does that change with the edition?
- If we start on Community, how hard is a move later?
Costs beyond the licence
A free licence does not mean free to run. You still pay for set-up, hosting, backups, support and upgrades. On the other side, a paid licence does not remove the need for good configuration and training. Compare the whole cost of ownership across a few years, not only the line for the licence.
Custom work also matters. If Community needs several custom features to match what Enterprise offers, count the cost of building and upgrading them. Sometimes the licence is cheaper. Sometimes it is not.
Moving later
Many businesses begin on Community, learn what they really need, and decide later. Moving is possible, but it needs a planned test on a copy of your data, as any version change does. If you think you will move, tell your implementer at the start so custom work is built in the standard way.
Common mistakes
- Picking Enterprise because it sounds safer, then using the same few apps as before.
- Picking Community and then building many custom features that already exist elsewhere.
- Forgetting hosting and support in the comparison.
- Deciding before the fit and gap review.
Where Teapot Techies fits
We help you choose by what you need, not by the edition. Our Odoo implementation work includes a fit and gap review before anything is decided. We can host either edition through our hosting and security service, and Enterprise licences are bought separately from Odoo.
